De BMW M5 voor modeljaar 2025, intern aangeduid als G90, markeert een breuk met eerdere generaties. Het is de eerste M5 die standaard als plug-in hybride wordt geleverd, waarmee BMW de sportieve sedan positioneert binnen een breder kader van prestaties en efficiëntie. Ondanks de technologische koerswijziging blijft de M5 herkenbaar als topmodel binnen het gamma.
De aandrijflijn combineert een 4,4-liter V8 met twee turbo’s met een elektrische motor, samen goed voor een systeemvermogen van 535 kW (727 pk) en een maximumkoppel tot 1.000 Nm. De kracht wordt overgebracht via een achttraps automaat naar alle vier de wielen via M xDrive, waarbij verschillende rijmodi de balans tussen stabiliteit en dynamiek bepalen.
In dynamisch opzicht ligt de nadruk op beheersing en herhaalbaarheid. Het hogere gewicht ten opzichte van eerdere M5-generaties vraagt om een nauwkeurige afstemming van onderstel, remmen en elektronische hulpsystemen, zodat prestaties ook onder wisselende omstandigheden consistent blijven.
