De BMW M3 Touring (G81) was in 2023 de praktische tegenhanger van de M3 Sedan, maar wel met dezelfde ambitie. BMW M maakte er voor het eerst een serieproductie van: een M3 als stationwagon, met een achterzijde die ruimte en gebruiksgemak toevoegt zonder het concept van een compacte, snelle 3-serie los te laten. De marktintroductie volgde na de start van de productie eind 2022, waardoor de M3 Touring in 2023 breed op de weg verscheen.
Onder de motorkap ligt de 3,0-liter zescilinder-in-lijn met M TwinPower Turbo, in Competition-uitvoering goed voor 375 kW (510 pk) en 650 Nm. De aandrijving loopt via een 8-traps M Steptronic automaat naar M xDrive vierwielaandrijving, met de mogelijkheid om de auto duidelijk meer naar achterwielaandrijving te laten aanvoelen via rij-instellingen. BMW geeft voor de sprint 0-100 km/u 3,6 seconden op en een begrensde topsnelheid van 250 km/u, of 280 km/u met het M Driver’s Package.
Het onderstel en de carrosserie werden aangepast aan het Touring-concept, met extra aandacht voor stijfheid en stabiliteit bij hoge belasting. In de dagelijkse praktijk is het juist het dubbele karakter dat de M3 Touring definieert: hij kan lange stukken comfortabel afleggen, maar blijft in reactie en tractie duidelijk een M3.
Tegelijk blijft het een stationwagon met bruikbare bagageruimte. BMW noemt 500 liter met de achterbank overeind en 1.510 liter met de achterbank neergeklapt. Daarmee kreeg de M3 in 2023 een uitvoering die prestaties niet als doel op zichzelf neerzet, maar als iets dat samengaat met het ritme van alledag.
