De BMW M3 (E46) verscheen in 2000 als de nieuwe sportieve topversie van de 3-serie en werd in maart van dat jaar voor het eerst als productiemodel getoond. BMW positioneerde de auto als opvolger van de E36 M3, met een breder spoor, uitgesproken wielkasten en een carrosserie die duidelijk herkenbaar bleef als 3-serie coupé, maar met details die naar het circuitwerk van BMW M verwezen.
Onder de motorkap ligt de atmosferische 3,2-liter zescilinder lijnmotor S54 (3.246 cc), goed voor 343 pk (252 kW) bij 7.900 tpm en 365 Nm bij 4.900 tpm. Het karakter van de aandrijflijn draait om hoge toerentallen en directe gasrespons, met een rode lijn rond 8.000 tpm. De standaard transmissie is een handgeschakelde zesbak; later werd ook de geautomatiseerde handbak SMG II aangeboden.
In de techniek ligt de nadruk op balans en precisie. De E46 M3 gebruikt achterwielaandrijving en een onderstel dat duidelijk afwijkt van de reguliere 3-serie, met remmen en afstemming die passen bij langdurige belasting. Het resultaat is een auto die bekend werd om zijn voorspelbare gedrag op tempo, terwijl hij tegelijk bruikbaar bleef als dagelijkse coupé.
De productie van de M3 Coupé (E46) liep van 2000 tot 2006, met Regensburg als assemblagelocatie. In retrospectief geldt de vroege E46 M3 als een kantelpunt: modern genoeg door zijn elektronica en verfijning, maar nog sterk bepaald door een hoogtoerige atmosferische motor en een relatief compacte, klassieke coupé-opzet.
