De Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) verscheen in 1999 en werd tot 2002 gebouwd. Binnen die generatie groeide de Nismo Z-tune uit tot de afsluitende, fabrieksmatige herbouwvariant. Het project startte met een Z1-prototype dat tijdens het Nismo Festival 2000 werd ingezet en daar de Tuners’ Battle won. Daarna werkte Nismo toe naar een serie die expliciet bedoeld was voor straatgebruik, maar met de focus op prestaties en betrouwbaarheid.
In de productieversie stond de RB26DETT ‘Z2’ motor centraal, door Nismo vergroot naar 2.771 cm³ en gecombineerd met grotere turbo’s. Het opgegeven vermogen bedroeg 373 kW (507 PS) bij 6.800 tpm en het koppel 539 Nm bij 5.200 tpm, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde zesbak en vierwielaandrijving. Voor de Z-tune werden prestaties genoemd zoals 0–100 km/h in 3,8 seconden en een topsnelheid van meer dan 327 km/h.
Voor de reeks kocht Nismo in Japan twintig gebruikte R34 GT-R’s, gebaseerd op V-spec-auto’s met minder dan 30.000 km en zonder schadeverleden, waarna de wagens volledig werden gestript en van de basis opnieuw opgebouwd. Het opgegeven rijklaar gewicht kwam uit op 1.599 kg. De techniek werd aangescherpt met een Sachs-onderstel en een speciaal ontwikkeld Brembo remsysteem, aangevuld met verstevigingen en carbon onderdelen. De nieuwprijs werd vastgesteld op 17.745.000 yen, terwijl Nismo ook een conversie naar Z-tune-specificatie aanbood voor bestaande R34’s.
Hoewel de planning op twintig stuks stond, eindigde de productie op negentien auto’s inclusief het prototype en twee exemplaren die bewaard bleven. Zeventien Z-tunes werden gespoten in ‘Z-tune Silver’, terwijl twee auto’s hun oorspronkelijke kleur behielden. Daarmee is de Z-tune een herkenbaar sluitstuk van de R34-historie, interessant voor verzamelaars vanwege de combinatie van beperkte aantallen en aantoonbare Nismo-fabrieksopbouw.
