De Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) kwam in 1999 op de markt en vormde de laatste GT-R onder de naam "Skyline" voordat de latere R35 als afzonderlijk Nissan GT-R model werd gelanceerd. Binnen de R34-lijn bouwde Nismo jaren later een kleine serie Z-tune-auto’s, bedoeld als jubileumproject. Die Z-tune’s werden niet nieuw geproduceerd, maar opgebouwd uit gebruikte R34 GT-R’s die door Nismo compleet werden gestript en opnieuw opgebouwd.
Technisch draaide het bij de Z-tune om de Z2-motor, een doorontwikkelde versie van de RB26DETT met een grotere cilinderinhoud van 2,8 liter en twee turbo’s. Nismo noemde voor de straatversie een vermogen van meer dan 368 kW (500 ps) en 540 Nm, met nadruk op duurzaamheid en respons. De auto bleef vierwielaandrijving gebruiken, met een handgeschakelde zesbak als basis.
Over de productie wordt meestal gesproken in termen van 19 tot 20 auto’s, omdat er een prototype was en omdat de serie uit omgebouwde basisauto’s bestond. Wat kleur betreft is “Midnight Purple” bij de R34 geen enkelvoudige tint. Nissan gebruikte onder meer Midnight Purple II (LV4) en Midnight Purple III (LX0); een Z-tune die zijn paarse kleur behield wordt vaak aangeduid als Midnight Purple III. Zonder chassis- of lakcode is het niet verantwoord om verder te specificeren dan dit.
Wie het dus heeft over een “1999 R34 Z-tune” bedoelt meestal een R34 uit de eerste bouwjaren (1999–2002) die later door Nismo naar Z-tune-specificatie is gebracht. Daarmee valt het model historisch gezien in twee periodes: de oorspronkelijke R34-productiejaren en de latere Nismo-ombouw tot Z-tune.
