De Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 werd in 1977 geleverd als coupé en Targa en nam binnen de G-serie een duidelijke tussenpositie in. Porsche bracht dit type in 1976 en 1977 uit, buiten Noord-Amerika, met bredere achterspatborden en de mogelijkheid voor een “whale tail” achterspoiler. Daarmee kreeg de Carrera 3.0 de uitstraling van de 911 Turbo, terwijl het model bedoeld was als krachtige, bruikbare 911 voor de weg.
De techniek draaide om de atmosferische 3,0-liter zescilinder boxermotor van 2.994 cc, type 930/02, met Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) injectie. Het fabrieksvermogen werd opgegeven als 200 PS (147 kW) bij 6.000 t/min en het koppel als 255 Nm bij 4.200 t/min. De Carrera 3.0 werd geleverd met een handgeschakelde 915-versnellingsbak, waarbij een vier- of vijfversnellingsbak genoemd wordt, en er was ook een 3-traps Sportomatic als alternatief.
In productieaantallen bleef het model beperkt. Voor 1976 en 1977 samen worden 2.566 coupés en 1.125 Targa’s genoemd, met in totaal 3.691 handgeschakelde auto’s en 58 exemplaren met Sportomatic. In de praktijk wordt de Carrera 3.0 vaak gezien als schakel tussen de eerdere Carrera 2.7 en de latere 911 SC, met de nadruk op een sterke basis en een bruikbare vermogensafgifte.
