De Ford Sierra Cosworth uit 1986 markeerde een belangrijk hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de sportieve gezinsauto’s. Ontwikkeld in nauwe samenwerking met het motorsportdivisie Ford Motorsport en het Britse Cosworth, werd de Sierra Cosworth ontworpen als homologatiemodel voor Groep A-rally- en toerwagenraces. De auto werd gebaseerd op de driedeurs Sierra XR4i, maar kreeg een compleet eigen carrosserie met een agressieve voorspoiler, bredere wielkasten en de kenmerkende dubbele achterspoiler.
Onder de motorkap lag een 2.0 liter viercilinder turbomotor, intern bekend als de Cosworth YB. Deze motor met dubbele bovenliggende nokkenassen en Garrett T3-turbo leverde 204 pk, goed voor een acceleratie van 0 naar 100 km/u in slechts 6,5 seconden. De achterwielaandrijving werd gecombineerd met een handgeschakelde vijfbak en een sperdifferentieel, wat zorgde voor een directe rijbeleving en uitstekende tractie, zowel op het circuit als op bochtige bergwegen. Het onderstel werd speciaal verstevigd voor hogere belastingen in competitieverband.
