Op 6 april 2025 maakte Yuki Tsunoda zijn debuut voor Red Bull Racing in de Japanse Grand Prix op Suzuka. Net 25 jaar, met startnummer 22 in de RB21, verving hij Liam Lawson. De beslissing was genomen omdat Lawson moeite had met het lastig te rijden RB21-monopost, terwijl Tsunoda meer ervaring en aansluiting bij Honda had.
In de eerste vrije training liet Tsunoda meteen zien dat hij de RB21 aanvoelde: met 1:29.172 bleef hij slechts 0,1 seconde achter teamgenoot Max Verstappen, sneller dan Lawson in eerdere sessies. Hij vertelde later dat het rijden met de RB21 vergelijkbaar was met een chemielab dat “soms goed werkt, soms niet”, en dat hij meer tijd nodig had om het gedrag van de auto consequent te beheersen.
In kwalificatie ging het minder soepel: Tsunoda strandde in Q2 op een vijftiende plaats en gaf toe dat “alles steeds slechter werd” tijdens zijn laatste runs. Na gridstraffen schoof hij op naar P14. De race op zondag eindigde teleurstellend in P12, twee plaatsen achter zijn teamgenoot. Ondanks het resultaat oogde zijn racepace beter naarmate het evenement vorderde en Tsunoda toonde veel inzet.
Na afloop roemde Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko de solide inzet van Tsunoda op zijn thuisbaan. Bij een stemming op de officiële Formule 1-site werd hij zelfs gekozen tot ‘Driver of the Day’. Hoewel hij geen punten behaalde, liet hij zien dat hij de RB21 beter kan hanteren dan Lawson. Het was een veelbelovende start voor zijn samenwerking met Verstappen en de overgang naar het hoofdam so Red Bull-team.
