Oscar Piastri eindigde de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië 2026 als elfde, nadat contact in de openingsronde zijn kansen op punten vrijwel direct had verkleind. De Australiër begon de race vanaf de achtste plaats, maar raakte in het gedrang met Liam Lawson. Daarbij liep de voorvleugel van de McLaren #81 schade op en moest Piastri aan het einde van de eerste ronde naar de pits.
McLaren verving de complete neus en wisselde de mediumbanden voor harde banden. De reparatie kostte bijna veertien seconden, waarna Piastri als laatste terugkeerde op de baan. In vrije lucht bleek het tempo van de MCL40 beter dan de positie deed vermoeden, maar het tijdverlies van de vroege stop was te groot om volledig goed te maken. Slijtage aan de linker voorband maakte de lange stint bovendien niet eenvoudiger.
Piastri maakte in ronde 36 een tweede stop voor mediumbanden en kreeg elf ronden later nog een set zachte banden. Met die laatste wissel probeerde McLaren te profiteren van de safetycar die volgde op de crash van Max Verstappen. Piastri won nog enkele plaatsen, maar kwam 0,569 seconde tekort om Pierre Gasly van de tiende positie te verdringen. De elfde plaats leverde hem voor het eerst sinds de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna 2024 geen WK-punten op.
Eerder in het weekend was Piastri zevende geworden in de sprintrace en had hij zich als achtste gekwalificeerd voor de Grand Prix. McLaren reed op Silverstone met een eenmalige kleurstelling die verwees naar de M2B, de eerste Formule 1-auto van het team uit 1966. Het ontwerp combineerde het gebruikelijke papaja met witte en donkergroene vlakken en werd ontwikkeld met partner Google Gemini. De historische uitvoering kreeg voor Piastri geen passend resultaat: één incident in de eerste ronde bepaalde de rest van zijn middag.
