Lando Norris reed de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië 2026 van de zesde naar de vierde plaats. De regerend wereldkampioen begon zijn thuisrace achter de Ferrari’s, Mercedessen en de Red Bull van Isack Hadjar, nadat McLaren in de kwalificatie duidelijk snelheid tekortkwam. Norris had het maximale uit zijn laatste ronde gehaald, maar gaf met de MCL40 ruim zeven tienden toe op polesitter Kimi Antonelli.
McLaren verscheen op Silverstone met een grotendeels witte kleurstelling, voorzien van groene en papajakleurige accenten. Het ontwerp verwees naar de McLaren M2B waarmee Bruce McLaren in 1966 aan het eerste Formule 1-seizoen van het team begon. In datzelfde jaar behaalde McLaren tijdens de Britse Grand Prix het eerste WK-punt uit de geschiedenis van het merk. Zestig jaar later droeg de auto van Norris opnieuw een witte basis, ditmaal in combinatie met partner Google Gemini.
Norris verloor bij de start een positie en reed aanvankelijk als zevende. McLaren koos voor een strategie waarmee hij later in de wedstrijd druk kon zetten op Max Verstappen. De Britse coureur schoof op toen Kimi Antonelli met technische problemen terugviel en Verstappen vier ronden voor de finish bij Stowe van de baan ging. Het incident van de Nederlander bracht de safetycar naar buiten.
De wedstrijd werd niet meer hervat. Norris kwam als vierde over de finish, op iets meer dan een seconde van winnaar Charles Leclerc en vlak achter Lewis Hamilton. Daarmee bleef een tweede opeenvolgende zege in zijn thuisrace buiten bereik. De twaalf punten waren volgens teambaas Andrea Stella meer dan McLaren op basis van de snelheid van de auto mocht verwachten. De MCL40 verloor op Silverstone ongeveer een halve seconde per ronde op Ferrari en Mercedes, maar Norris benutte de problemen voor hem en bracht de speciale #1 zonder fouten naar de finish.
