De Grand Prix van Monaco 1987 werd een keerpunt in de band tussen Ayrton Senna en de straten van Monte Carlo. Met de Lotus 99T-Honda met startnummer 12 kwalificeerde de Braziliaan zich als tweede, achter Nigel Mansell, maar in Monaco telt niet alleen pure snelheid. Ritme, geduld en foutloos rijden wegen er minstens zo zwaar.
De Lotus 99T was een technisch bijzondere auto. Achter de coureur lag een 1,5 liter Honda V6-turbomotor, gekoppeld aan een chassis met actieve wielophanging. Dat systeem moest de rijhoogte constanter houden en de auto stabieler maken over hobbels en kerbstones. Op een circuit als Monaco, waar de vangrails dicht op de ideale lijn staan, was dat geen detail maar een bruikbaar wapen.
Mansell leidde in de openingsfase, maar viel uit met turboproblemen. Vanaf dat moment lag de weg open voor Senna, die de race strak controleerde. Nelson Piquet eindigde als tweede in de Williams-Honda, op ruim een halve minuut, terwijl Michele Alboreto met Ferrari derde werd. Voor Senna was het zijn eerste overwinning in Monaco.
Die zege gaf de gele Camel Lotus 99T een vaste plaats in de Formule 1-geschiedenis. Het was niet de snelste auto van het seizoen, maar op de krappe straten van Monte Carlo kwamen techniek en rijstijl precies samen. De #12 Lotus uit Monaco 1987 laat zien hoe Senna al vóór zijn McLaren-jaren een race naar zich toe kon trekken wanneer precisie belangrijker werd dan overmacht.
