In Casino Royale uit 2006 krijgt de Aston Martin DB5 een andere rol dan in de klassieke Bond-films. Geen gadgetauto uit de werkplaats van Q, maar een prijs aan de pokertafel. James Bond wint de zilverkleurige DB5 van Alex Dimitrios op de Bahama’s, waarmee de auto een korte maar herkenbare plaats krijgt in het begin van Daniel Craigs periode als 007.
De gebruikte DB5 is een links gestuurde Aston Martin uit 1964 met Bahamaans kenteken 56526. Dat wijkt af van de bekendere Britse DB5 met kenteken BMT 216A uit eerdere Bond-films. Juist dat detail maakt de Casino Royale-auto interessant: hij hoort bij dezelfde legende, maar vertelt een ander hoofdstuk binnen de filmreeks.
Technisch blijft de DB5 een echte Britse gran turismo. De 4,0 liter zescilinder lijnmotor levert 282 pk en is gekoppeld aan achterwielaandrijving. De carrosserie van Touring combineert strakke lijnen met een ingetogen houding, zonder dat de auto nadrukkelijk om aandacht vraagt.
In de film draait het optreden niet om achtervolgingen of verborgen wapens, maar om sfeer en karakter. De DB5 past bij Bond op het moment dat zijn stijl nog wordt gevormd. Voor verzamelaars is deze uitvoering daardoor meer dan een bekende Aston Martin; het is de DB5 uit het begin van een nieuwe Bond-periode.
