Henk Lategan en co-piloot Brett Cummings vertegenwoordigen Toyota Gazoo Racing als team #225 in de 2022 Dakar Rally. Beide Zuid-Afrikanen zijn ervaren cross-country-rijders en traditioneel sterk in zand en ruw terrein. Lategan won het Zuid-Afrikaanse cross-country kampioenschap in 2019 en 2020; Cummings behaalde eerder Dakar-winst in 2012 als co-pilot.

Tijdens de 2022-editie wist Lategan zijn eerste Dakar-etappezege binnen te halen. In stage 5, nabij Riyadh, versloeg hij met zijn Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ de legende Sébastien Loeb met bijna twee minuten voorsprong. De overwinning kwam niet van een leien dakje: een loszittende portier, een lekke band en probleem met de brandstofdruk maakten de rit extra zwaar. Ondanks die tegenslagen hield het team stand en finishte ze als snelste in die zware etappe.

Volgens de officiële step-resultaten voor kansauto’s begin van de rally (stage 1–6), was hun beste prestatie al in stage 3, waar ze de etappe wonnen. Na zes etappes stond hun algemene klassement op plaats 42. Uiteindelijk sloten Lategan en Cummings de Dakar af op plaats 31 in het algemeen klassement met slechts twee etappezeges als gloriepunten.

Voor Lategan betekent dit seizoen vooral progressie. Het was zijn tweede Dakar-editie (eerste in 2021 eindigde met uitval), en hij wist nu dankzij deze overwinningen zijn potentieel te demonstreren.
