De Audi 200 quattro C3 uit 1989 was geen auto die schreeuwde om aandacht. Hij deed het op de Audi-manier van die periode: strak gelijnd, technisch doordacht en met een zekere ingetogenheid. Onder de zakelijke carrosserie zat techniek die rechtstreeks aansloot bij Audi’s snelle opmars in rally en toerwagenracerij.
De 200 was gebaseerd op de C3-generatie, intern bekend als Typ 44. In 1989 werd de 2,2 liter vijfcilinder turbomotor een belangrijk herkenningspunt van de reeks. De 20V-versie leverde 220 pk en werd gecombineerd met quattro-vierwielaandrijving, waardoor de grote sedan prestaties bood die niet pasten bij zijn keurige uiterlijk. Juist dat contrast maakte de auto interessant.
Ook in de autosport had de Audi 200 quattro zijn rol al gespeeld. De Trans-Am-uitvoering uit 1988 bracht vierwielaandrijving naar een kampioenschap dat vooral door Amerikaanse V8’s werd gekleurd. In 1989 nam de compactere Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO het stokje over, maar de 200 had het punt al gemaakt: Audi kon zijn quattro-filosofie ook op asfalt laten werken.
De 1989 Audi 200 quattro C3 staat daardoor op een bijzonder kruispunt. Het was een ruime zakenauto, maar ook een machine met duidelijke sportieve wortels. Geen opzichtig icoon, wel een auto die liet zien hoe Audi techniek, comfort en competitie-ervaring in één nuchter geheel wist samen te brengen.
