De Audi quattro uit 1982 behoort tot de eerste generatie vierwielaangedreven rallyauto’s waarmee Audi het World Rally Championship ingrijpend veranderde. De lange quattro kwam uit volgens de toenmalige Group 4-reglementen en combineerde turbotechniek met permanente vierwielaandrijving. In het seizoen 1982 behaalde Audi met deze auto voor het eerst de wereldtitel bij de constructeurs.
De rally-quattro werd aangedreven door een voorin geplaatste 2.144 cc vijfcilinder turbomotor. Afhankelijk van de uitvoering en afstelling lag het vermogen rond de 320 tot 350 pk. De kracht werd via een handgeschakelde vijfversnellingsbak naar alle vier de wielen gestuurd. Juist die vierwielaandrijving gaf Audi veel tractie op sneeuw, gravel en nat asfalt, terwijl veel concurrenten nog met achterwielaandrijving reden.
Audi won in 1982 meerdere WRC-rally’s met de quattro. Stig Blomqvist won in Zweden en Sanremo, terwijl Hannu Mikkola zegevierde in Finland en de RAC Rally. De Franse pilote Michèle Mouton won samen met copilote Fabrizia Pons de Rally van Portugal, de Acropolis Rally en de Rally van Brazilië. Mouton eindigde dat seizoen als tweede in het rijderskampioenschap, achter Walter Röhrl.
De successen van 1982 maakten duidelijk dat vierwielaandrijving een blijvend voordeel bood in de rallysport. Audi bleef de lange wielbasis van de oorspronkelijke quattro gebruiken totdat de verder ontwikkelde A1- en A2-versies en later de kortere Sport quattro verschenen.
