In 1980 bevond de Autobianchi A112 zich in een belangrijke tussenfase van zijn lange loopbaan. Het model was al sinds 1969 in productie, maar verscheen in 1979 in een vernieuwde vijfde serie die ook in 1980 het straatbeeld bepaalde. Die versie was direct herkenbaar aan de grotere kunststof delen rond de achterzijde, aangepaste bumpers en nieuwe zijbescherming. Daarmee schoof de A112 visueel mee met de stijl van de vroege jaren tachtig, zonder zijn compacte basisformule te verliezen: een korte driedeurs hatchback met voorwielaandrijving, een dwars geplaatste motor en een carrosserieconcept dat in Europa vroeg liet zien hoe bruikbaar een kleine hatchback kon zijn
