De Ford Shelby GT350 uit 1965 ontstond toen Carroll Shelby van de Mustang Fastback een auto maakte die ook op het circuit serieus genomen werd. De eerste GT350’s werden in Californië door Shelby American afgebouwd op basis van door Ford aangeleverde fastbacks, met het oog op homologatie voor SCCA B-Production.
Onder de motorkap ligt de 289 cubic inch (4,7 liter) V8 uit de Mustang K-code. Shelby paste onder meer een high-rise inlaatspruitstuk, grotere carburateur en een vrijer uitlaatsysteem toe; het officiële vermogen werd 306 pk en 329 lb-ft (circa 446 Nm). De aandrijving loopt via een handgeschakelde vierbak (Borg-Warner T-10), met een onderstel dat dichter tegen de raceauto aanzit, inclusief Koni-schokdempers, snelle stuurinrichting en traction bars.
Visueel zijn de 1965-auto’s herkenbaar aan de Wimbledon White-lak, Guardsman Blue rocker stripes en vaak (niet altijd) Le Mans-strepen over de volle lengte. Kenmerkend zijn ook de glasvezel motorkap met functionele scoop en de side-exit uitlaten. Om als ‘sports car’ te tellen voor de klasse-eisen werd de achterbank verwijderd en kwam er een glasvezelplank met plek voor een volwaardig reservewiel; ook de kofferbak-accu is typisch voor het bouwjaar.
Voor verzamelaars is 1965 extra interessant door de lage aantallen: in totaal 562 stuks, waarvan 504 straatversies en 34 fabriek-competitieauto’s (GT350R). Dat maakt details belangrijk bij miniaturen: de juiste striping-configuratie, zwarte interieurindruk, de spare-opstelling achterin, de side pipes en de proporties van de motorkapscoop bepalen snel of een model “65-correct” oogt.

The model offered here is a diecast, which means that a material is injected into a mold in which it cools to the desired shape. Zamac is often used for this purpose, a mixture of Zinc, Aluminium, Magnesium and Copper. Small parts of this hybrid model may be plastic, rubber or etched copper plate. A diecast generally uses sustainable materials that not only ensure a long life for your valuable model, but are also recyclable at there end of life.
