Tijdens de Dakar Rally van 2022 verschenen Giniel de Villiers en navigator Dennis Murphy aan de start met de Toyota Hilux T1+ van Toyota Gazoo Racing. De Zuid-Afrikaanse equipe reed met startnummer 207 en verdedigde opnieuw de eer van Toyota in een veld vol ervaren rijders en fabrieksteams. Hun voertuig viel op door de opvallende rood-wit-zwarte kleurstelling en het prominente GR-logo op de zijkant van de carrosserie.
De Hilux T1+ werd ingezet in de vernieuwde topcategorie van de Dakar-reglementen en beschikte over een 3.5 liter V6 biturbo benzinemotor afkomstig uit de Toyota Land Cruiser. De aandrijving op vier wielen, aangepaste vering en versterkte ophanging maakten deze wagen geschikt voor de extreme woestijnomstandigheden. Dankzij bredere banden en een aangepaste carrosserie kon de auto beter omgaan met het zand en de stenen in Saoedi-Arabië.
De Villiers en Murphy hielden een regelmatig tempo aan en bleven uit de grote problemen. Hun ervaring en tactiek zorgden voor een stabiele prestatie, waarmee ze uiteindelijk als vijfde eindigden in het algemene klassement. De auto droeg tal van bekende sponsorlogo’s, waaronder Motul, Eurol, Innovation Group en Kinto, die allemaal terug te vinden zijn op het voertuig.
Ixo Models brengt deze uitvoering uit in schaal 1:43 met veel aandacht voor belettering en kleurindeling. De decoratie toont onder meer het startnummer 207, de sponsorstickers en de matzwarte grille met TOYOTA-embleem. Ook details als de wielkasten, luchtinlaten en spatborden zijn natuurgetrouw weergegeven. Deze uitvoering is een waardevolle aanvulling voor liefhebbers van rallyvoertuigen en Dakar-historie.
