De startnummer 21 in de Grand Prix van Brazilië 1986 was de Osella-Alfa Romeo van Piercarlo Ghinzani. De openingsronde van het seizoen werd verreden op 23-03-1986 op Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro, onder warme en droge omstandigheden. Ghinzani kwalificeerde de #21 als 23e en moest de race aanvangen vanuit het achterste deel van het veld, waar verkeer en temperatuurbeheer meteen bepalend waren.
De auto was de Osella FA1G met de Alfa Romeo 890T, een 1,5-liter V8 turbo (1496,7 cc). In 1986 draaide het bij dit type motor om een bruikbare turbodruk over een lange afstand, maar ook om koeling en brandstofverbruik binnen de toenmalige restricties. Op Jacarepaguá, met lange stukken volgas en zware remzones, stond de betrouwbaarheid van het turbopakket continu onder druk.
In de race kwam de #21 niet ver genoeg om dat etmaalachtige ritme op te bouwen: na 16 ronden viel Ghinzani uit met motorproblemen. Daarmee bleef het bij een korte wedstrijd voor Osella, terwijl vooraan Nelson Piquet won en Ayrton Senna tweede werd. Voor startnummer 21 onderstreepte Brazilië 1986 vooral hoe smal de marge was voor kleinere teams in het turbotijdperk, zeker wanneer een vroege uitval elke kans op een klassering wegneemt.
