De Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X is het moment waarop de C8-generatie definitief het terrein van de hypercars betreedt. In zwart oogt de auto minder uitbundig dan sommige introductiekleuren, maar juist daardoor komen de brede carrosserie, grote luchtinlaten en scherpe aerodynamica duidelijk naar voren.
Technisch combineert de ZR1X de 5,5 liter LT7 V8 met twee turbo’s met een elektromotor op de vooras. De V8 levert 1.064 pk, de elektrische aandrijving voegt 186 pk toe en samen komt het systeemvermogen uit op 1.250 pk. Daarmee is dit de krachtigste productie-Corvette tot nu toe, met vierwielaandrijving als belangrijk verschil ten opzichte van de ZR1.
De prestaties passen bij die cijfers. Chevrolet noemt een sprint naar 60 mph in minder dan twee seconden en een kwartmijl onder de negen seconden. Toch blijft de ZR1X herkenbaar als Corvette: laag, breed, met de motor achter de inzittenden en een cockpit die meer op circuitgebruik dan op boulevardrijden is gericht.
De zwarte Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X laat goed zien hoe ver het Amerikaanse sportwagenconcept is opgeschoven. Waar de Corvette ooit vooral werd gezien als een snelle V8-coupé, staat hier een hybride vierwielaangedreven topmodel dat zich qua techniek en prestaties tussen de gevestigde hypercars mengt.
