De Toyota Supra Mk.4 uit The Fast and the Furious groeide uit tot een van de herkenbaarste filmauto’s van de vroege jaren 2000. In de film wordt de auto opgebouwd door Brian O’Conner en het team van Dominic Toretto, waarna de oranje Supra een centrale rol krijgt in de bekende straatrace tegen de Ferrari F355 Spider.
De basis was een vierde generatie Toyota Supra, intern bekend als de A80. De auto gebruikte de 3,0 liter zescilinder lijnmotor uit Toyota’s 2JZ-familie, een motorblok dat in de tuningscene een bijna vaste reputatie kreeg door zijn sterke constructie en grote vermogenspotentieel. Voor de film kreeg de Supra een uitgesproken uiterlijk met Bomex-delen, een opvallende motorkap, grote achtervleugel, vijfspaaks velgen en de bekende oranje lak met zijgraphics.
Opvallend is dat de filmversie meer was dan alleen decor. De Supra sloot aan bij de tuningcultuur van die periode, waarin Japanse sportwagens, bodykits, neonkleuren en zichtbare technische aanpassingen een groot deel van de uitstraling bepaalden. De auto bracht die wereld naar een breed publiek, zonder dat de film zich beperkte tot pure autosport.
De 2001 Toyota Supra Mk.4 Bomex The Fast and the Furious staat daardoor niet alleen voor een filmmoment, maar ook voor een tijdsbeeld. De combinatie van Toyota-techniek, straatracecultuur en Hollywood-herkenbaarheid maakte de Supra tot een icoon dat ver buiten de filmreeks bleef voortleven.
