De Chevrolet C1 Convertible is de eerste generatie Corvette en werd gebouwd van juni 1953 tot juli 1962. In die periode bleef de carrosserievorm consequent een tweedurs open uitvoering, waarmee Chevrolet een duidelijke keuze maakte voor een Amerikaanse sportwagen die zich onderscheidde van de reguliere modellen in het gamma. De productie startte in Flint en verhuisde al vroeg naar St. Louis, terwijl het ontwerp onder leiding stond van Harley Earl.
De basis van de C1 is herkenbaar aan de lichtgewicht kunststof carrosserie (fiberglass) en een techniekpakket dat in de beginjaren leunde op bestaande Chevrolet-componenten. De eerste auto’s kregen een 235 cubic inch “Blue Flame” zescilinder in lijn met een 2-traps Powerglide-automaat. In 1955 volgde de omslag met de introductie van de 265 cubic inch small-block V8, en vanaf 1956 werd de C1 V8-only.
Vanaf 1957 groeide de C1 mee met de prestaties waar kopers om vroegen. Dat jaar kwamen de 283 cubic inch V8, een handgeschakelde 4-bak en brandstofinjectie als optie in beeld. De Corvette Museum-documentatie noemt in 1957 expliciet de mijlpaal van “één pk per cubic inch” bij de 283 pk brandstofinjectie-uitvoering.
Tegen het einde van de generatie veranderde de C1 vooral in detail en presentatie: 1961 bracht een nieuwe achterzijde met ronde achterlichten, en 1962 sloot af met de 327 cubic inch V8 als nieuwe motorstap. Daarmee werd de C1 het model waarin Chevrolet in minder dan tien jaar tijd de lijn verlegde van een zescilinder roadster naar een V8-sportwagen met serieuze prestaties, nog altijd in het herkenbare open silhouet.
